ISBL Professional Standards
The School Business Professional Standards have been developed by the sector for the sector.
They are fully endorsed by representative bodies and by relevant professional bodies including the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
Additionally, these standards are recognised by the Department for Education as the key reference document for evaluating professional competency. The professional standards set out the core and specialist areas of competency required to operate at four tiers of practice from entry level to executive leadership.
The standards define both core and specialist competencies required across four progressive tiers of practice, from entry-level roles through to executive leadership. In doing so, they provide a clear, structured pathway for professional growth.
Beyond defining expectations, the standards serve as a robust framework for continuous professional development and career progression. They are designed to support individuals and organisations alike, complementing performance management processes and enabling a consistent, high-quality approach to professional development.
The Institute of School Business Leadership advocates that every role within the school business profession, from administrative officer to C-suite leadership, should be underpinned by a shared set of professional standards. These standards establish a clear blueprint for effective school and trust business leadership, while recognising and celebrating excellence already evident across the sector.
At the heart of the framework are eight key disciplines of school business leadership, alongside six essential behaviours that underpin effectiveness in the profession. Together, they provide a comprehensive and practical foundation for success.

New Chapters
AI, Digital & Data
The ISBL Digital Standards are designed to support schools and trusts in building digital capability, enabling them to lead, manage, and sustain effective digital transformation. They provide a clear, structured framework that maps progression from Foundation Practitioner to Strategic Practitioner. This allows both individuals and organisations to assess current practice, benchmark performance, and plan for continuous improvement.
Fully aligned with the Department for Education’s (DfE) digital and technology standards for schools and colleges, the ISBL Digital Standards complement national guidance by translating expectations into practical, role-specific competencies. These reflect the real operational and strategic demands of school business leadership.
These Digital standards form an addendum to the ISBL Professional Standards and should be read alongside them.

Sustainability
The ISBL sustainability standards have been designed to help ensure climate action and work to improve biodiversity are not treated as secondary considerations but as cornerstones to running a successful school or trust.
The standards provide a framework to guide school leaders to implement sustainability practices across a range of operational areas and are intended to help align practices, ensuring that all schools, regardless of their size or location, have a common benchmark for sustainability practices.
The sustainability standards are an addendum to the ISBL professional standards and therefore should be read in conjunction with these.
